Why I Became a Financial Advisor

As we get older, life seems to get more complicated. We move up the ladder in our career, we start a family, and we try to balance our wants and needs, and our short and long-term goals. With as busy as life can be already, it’s not surprising that many avoid or put off financial planning. It can seem like one more plate to add to the stack you’re already juggling.

This is where I come in. My goal as a financial advisor is to help individuals and families manage their finances and help them feel less overwhelmed.

Starting My Career

Financial advising wasn’t the first step in my career. After graduating from Hartwick College with a major in English, I started my career as a fundraiser and event planner for non-profits. I have always enjoyed working with teams – motivating them to work better together and raise more dollars for the cause – and felt the best way to accomplish this was to take the time to understand each of the individuals I worked with.

This customized approach carried over as I sought out a career in financial services. I was drawn to the challenge of learning a new field that catered to individuals and their financial well-being. In 2006, I changed careers and became a financial advisor, and I haven’t looked back since.

My Approach

At Massey Quick Simon, I advise clients across many aspects of wealth management so they can spend less time worrying and more time enjoying the life they have worked hard to build. This includes developing customized portfolios; education, retirement, and estate planning; cash flow analysis; and assessment of risk tolerance and time horizon. I also liaise with clients' CPAs and attorneys to enhance communication while managing the investment process, troubleshooting issues, and enhancing tax planning.

A personalized approach is at the forefront of all I do. Each of the families I work with is unique and deserves a customized, high-touch approach in managing their wealth. Client experience is my highest priority, and I enjoy working at a firm that allows me to focus on their individual needs, rather than products.

Ultimately, I believe clients choose to work with us because we are independent and are fiduciaries, so we owe our clients the duty of good faith and trust. We can cater to our clients and customize their experience so that it works for them. My goal is to deeply know my clients and become a trusted advocate for each family I work with.

The Hurdles and Triumphs

There are some challenges that come with this career. For one, it can be hard to keep clients on the path we create in the planning process during a volatile period in the market, as they may start thinking in the short-term rather than the long-term. These occasions sometimes require tough love to help keep them from making emotionally charged decisions that can turn into missteps when looking back.

Despite the challenges, I love my career. It’s so fulfilling meeting new people, helping them, and learning about new tools and strategies along the way so I can serve as a knowledgeable resource for my clients. Every day, I’m driven by my desire to help others and improve their experience with our firm.
